The step ladder mistake that sends Thanet hedge owners to A&E every summer.
I see this about once a fortnight between June and August. A standard domestic step ladder propped against a tall escallonia or griselinia hedge in a Cliftonville or Ramsgate garden, the owner two steps up with a running trimmer, reaching sideways to catch the top face. By that point, the physics of the situation have already decided how it ends. Hedge trimmers account for 3,100 UK accidents a year. The ladder is the variable that turns a nicked hand into a broken wrist, or worse. Here is what is actually going wrong, and what belongs on the job instead.
The mistake I see every week
The job looks easy from the ground. The hedge is two or three metres tall, the homeowner has a trimmer, and there is a step ladder in the garage. What most people miss is the geometry of the moment they start to reach sideways from the second step.
Standard domestic step ladders are stable when the load sits directly over the feet. Hedge trimming requires constant lateral reach, particularly for the flat top face of the hedge. The moment you extend a 3-kilogram trimmer sideways to level the top, you shift your centre of gravity toward the edge of the step. The ladder begins to tilt. On a Cliftonville or Westgate chalk-gravel path, the feet sink unevenly into the surface on one side, adding a lean you were not expecting. The recovery reflex is to grab something, which usually means the hedge, or a wild shift of body weight in the opposite direction. If the trimmer blade is still running at that point, the outcome is predictable.
This is not a theoretical risk. Directree, the arborist trade body resource, lists falls from step ladders as the most common cause of serious garden injuries resulting in broken bones or spinal injury in the UK. Hospital data puts garden accident admissions at around 8,500 per year. Hedge trimmers alone account for 3,100 UK accidents annually. The combination of a powered cutting blade and an unstable working platform concentrates both hazards into the same task at the same moment.
Why Thanet gardens make this worse
Most ladder safety guidance assumes flat, paved, hard-standing surfaces. A large proportion of domestic gardens on the Isle of Thanet do not have them, for reasons that are geological as much as horticultural.
The Margate Chalk and Thanet Sand beneath CT9 to CT12 drain fast and compress unevenly under surface material. Garden paths that looked level when first laid develop subtle tilts and soft spots over five or ten years. A ladder foot that sits flush on first placement rocks slightly when your weight shifts to one side. Older gardens in Margate Old Town, the eight Cliftonville conservation areas, and the West Cliff at Ramsgate commonly have chalk gravel or compacted chalk fines along the hedge run: step ladder feet are designed for hard flat surfaces, not loose aggregate.
The coastal wind is the second compounding factor. Gardens on the clifftop stretches of Cliftonville (CT9 to the north-east), Broadstairs East Cliff (CT10), and the headland above Ramsgate harbour (CT11) can be significantly windier than the same town feels at street level. A gust while you are on the second step of a ladder with a trimmer extended sideways is not the kind of thing you recover from the way you would at ground level.
The myth that causes the problem
Myth: “A step ladder is fine for a domestic hedge job if you’re careful.”
Fact: "Careful" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Being careful on a step ladder for hedge trimming means repositioning the ladder every 40 to 50 centimetres along the hedge run, never reaching sideways beyond the ladder's centre line, never having the blade running while you move, and checking the surface under both feet on every reposition. In practice, this takes three or four times as long as most homeowners plan for. The schedule pressure is usually what drives the over-reach, not carelessness as such.
A more accurate framing: for any hedge section you cannot reach comfortably from ground level with both feet flat on a stable surface, you need platform equipment. That does not mean hiring a cherry picker. For most domestic Thanet hedges it means a platform hop-up: a wide two-step unit with a large standing platform (typically 55 x 55 cm), which is stable under lateral load in a way a step ladder is not, because the platform width keeps you over the centre of the unit even while your arms extend to one side.
What to use instead
The right equipment depends on the hedge height:
- Up to about 1.5m (roughly chest height): Ground-level work with a cordless trimmer. No access equipment needed. Most maintained coastal front-garden hedges in Thanet, kept to this height, are entirely manageable from the ground. The dominant species, escallonia, griselinia littoralis and tamarix, cut easily at this height with a 36V or 40V cordless trimmer.
- 1.5m to 2m: A platform hop-up is the correct tool. Youngman, Werner and similar brands sell fibreglass two-step hop-ups with rubber feet for around £40 to £80. Most tool-hire shops carry them by the day. The wide platform keeps lateral reach within a stable footprint.
- 2m to 3m: A low-level platform tower (Youngman BoSS or equivalent) is the appropriate equipment. These are bulkier to set up and costlier to hire, which is the point where a contractor quote is usually better value, particularly if the hedge runs more than five or six metres.
- Over 3m: Contractor work. Hedges at this height require working-at-height competence, appropriate equipment inspection, and someone who has done it before. This is not a judgement about the homeowner's capability; it is a straightforward statement about what the job involves.
In Thanet terms: the typical front-garden escallonia or griselinia hedge in Cliftonville or Ramsgate town centre runs 1.8 to 2.4 metres. That puts most of those jobs in the hop-up or contractor category, not the step-ladder category most owners assume when they reach for the garage ladder.
When to call a professional, and why it costs less than the alternative
The break-even calculation is simpler than most people work through. A hop-up hire costs around £20 to £30 per day from a local tool-hire shop (there are hire outlets in Margate CT9, Broadstairs CT10 and Ramsgate CT11). A contractor quote for a 10-metre hedge at 2 metres tall typically runs £80 to £150 for a single visit, depending on species, access and how long since the last cut. The contractor brings the equipment, the public liability insurance, and the experience. The homeowner avoids the A&E visit, the six weeks off work, and the follow-up repair costs, which change the calculation substantially.
Where a professional contractor is clearly the better call in Thanet: any hedge over 1.8m running alongside a public pavement; any garden where the ground is not level; any clifftop position with prevailing south-westerly or north-easterly exposure; and any hedge that has not been cut in more than two years and has put on significant growth at the top. All four of those conditions apply to a large proportion of the hedges I am called to in the CT9 to CT12 postcode strip. The combination of tall coastal species, chalk-ground instability and salt-wind exposure makes the step-ladder problem more common here than in a sheltered inland garden on level clay.
The summer timing conflict: nesting season and hedge work
The impulse to tackle the hedge in June or July, while school is out and the weather is usable, runs directly into the main nesting window under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1. Cutting a hedge containing an active nest is a criminal offence carrying up to £5,000 per offence. The safe default cutting window is September to late February.
