The myth that spring is the right time to plant a new hedge, and why it fails on Thanet chalk.
Garden centres put pot-grown plants out in April. Nurseries run their spring promotions. Most hedging advice written for inland clay and loam soils says plant in spring when the soil warms up. Thanet chalk does not behave like inland clay. If your new escallonia or griselinia died between June and August, the planting month is almost certainly why.
The myth, stated plainly
Myth: "Spring is a good time to plant a new hedge. The soil is warming up, the plants are in growth, and pot-grown plants can go in any time of year anyway."
Fact: On Thanet's chalk-over geology, spring is the highest-risk planting window for a new hedge. October to February is the correct window for both bare-root and pot-grown hedging on the Isle of Thanet. Plants put in between March and June on Margate or Broadstairs chalk routinely fail by late summer, and the failure is entirely avoidable.
Why people believe it
Garden centres sell pot-grown plants throughout the growing season because that is when visitors show up. A pot-grown escallonia in a 2-litre pot looks healthy in May: green leaves, possibly in flower, visibly growing. The spring framing feels correct because elsewhere in the garden, spring is when things go in the ground.
Bare-root hedging is only available between November and late February or early March, when the plants are dormant and can be lifted and transported without soil. That window feels counterintuitive: the ground looks cold, the plants arrive as sticks, nobody is selling anything. The assumption forms that pot-grown plants are simply the year-round alternative, usable whenever you get round to it.
In a garden with heavy loam or clay soil over bedrock at one metre or more, that assumption is roughly correct. The surrounding soil retains moisture through summer and a new root ball can draw from it. On chalk, it is not correct at all.
What chalk actually does to a new root ball
The geology underlying most Thanet gardens is the Margate Chalk Formation: the same Cretaceous chalk that gives the North Foreland and the clifftops from Westgate-on-Sea to Ramsgate their profile. Across CT9 Margate and Cliftonville, CT10 Broadstairs and Kingsgate, CT11 and CT12 Ramsgate, and the clifftop gardens at Westgate (CT8) and Birchington (CT7), chalk parent material typically begins at 15 to 35 centimetres depth. In many town-centre and seafront gardens, especially on the north-east coast, the topsoil layer is a mix of imported fill and chalk rubble over solid chalk.
Chalk drains at a rate that clay gardeners find hard to imagine. After heavy rain, a chalk garden in Cliftonville will be dry on the surface within 24 to 48 hours. In June and July, with a south-westerly drying the chalk peninsula, that window is shorter. The same geology that makes the Pegwell Bay area a Ramsar site and a Site of Special Scientific Interest also makes the gardens above it drain like a colander.
A new pot-grown plant arrives with a 2 to 3 litre root ball. That root ball holds moisture in its own growing medium, typically a peat-free compost mix. In a clay garden, the surrounding soil adds to that moisture reserve. In a chalk garden, the surrounding soil provides almost no buffer: it drains as fast as the rain arrives. The root ball is the only water store the plant has, and once it dries out on Thanet chalk it dries fast.
Planted in April or May, a griselinia or escallonia on Cliftonville chalk will look fine for four to six weeks while the root ball stays damp from spring rainfall. Then early June arrives. The chalk surface dries. The root ball follows within a few days. The plant either goes into severe stress (leaf-drop, scorch on outer leaves, die-back on shoot tips) or fails outright. This is not drought in the usual garden sense: it is the straightforward consequence of planting a small container plant on fast-draining chalk and then not watering it every two to three days through summer. Most people do not water that consistently. The plants die.
The correct window, and what changes by species
Bare-root hedging (hawthorn, blackthorn, hornbeam, beech, field maple, dog rose, native privet): the window is fixed by dormancy. Plants are only available from specialist nurseries between November and early March. On Thanet chalk this is convenient: the dormant-season window aligns exactly with the period when chalk gardens are cold and damp enough to support root establishment before the first spring dry spell.
Plant bare-root whips as soon as they arrive: do not leave them out of the soil for more than a day or two. And cut back at planting. Hawthorn and blackthorn should be cut back by half; hornbeam, beech and field maple by a third. This step is skipped constantly, and the result is the same every time: a leggy hedge with bare lower stems that takes years to correct. The cut-back forces the plant to push new growth from the base, producing a dense, bushy hedge from the ground up rather than a sparse screen that you have to peer through at knee height.
Pot-grown hedging (escallonia, griselinia littoralis, tamarix, euonymus japonicus, holm oak, cherry laurel: the common species for Thanet's salt-belt and semi-sheltered plots): October to the end of February is the correct planting window on Thanet chalk. The soil is cold enough to slow water demand, winter rainfall keeps the chalk damp, and the plants have four to five months of cool conditions in which to extend their root systems before the chalk surface dries in May.
If you must plant pot-grown between March and September (filling a gap after a loss, or because the timing is unavoidable), you can, but you are committing to twice-weekly deep watering from planting through to October. On chalk in CT9 to CT12, that is 24 to 30 weeks of active irrigation. Most people will not sustain it. The plants die. The correct advice is: wait for autumn.

Birchington and Minster: where the margin is slightly wider
In Birchington (CT7) and around Minster and Sarre, Thanet Sand Formation deposits appear more frequently in the soil profile alongside the chalk. These areas still drain fast by UK standards, but they hold a little more moisture than the cliff-edge chalk plots in Broadstairs or north Cliftonville. The spring-planting warning still applies, but if you do plant pot-grown between March and May in these areas and you water consistently, the plants have a better chance of getting through summer than they would on pure chalk over Ramsgate headland (CT11) or at Kingsgate (CT10). On Pegwell Bay-facing plots in southern Ramsgate (CT12), the chalk geology returns and the risk level matches the rest of the peninsula.
First-year watering after autumn planting
Autumn planting on chalk does not mean no care at all. New hedge plants, bare-root or pot-grown, need monitoring weekly from April to September in their first year. Probe the soil around the root ball with a finger or a thin cane: if it is dry at 5 centimetres depth and the root ball is dry, water thoroughly, then let the chalk drain fully before watering again. Do not water daily on chalk: repeated shallow wetting followed by rapid drainage keeps the surface layer wet while the root ball zone dries. One deep watering per week from April to September is the correct regime for year one on Thanet chalk. By October of year one, most species will have extended their root system far enough into the surrounding chalk to source their own moisture without help.
New hedge in a conservation area?
If your garden is in one of Thanet's conservation areas (Margate Old Town, the eight Cliftonville CAs, Ramsgate town centre, Broadstairs Old Town, three Westgate CAs, Birchington Square or Minster core), planting a new hedge is generally exempt from the section 211 notification requirement.
