Myth: pittosporum tenuifolium is reliably frost-hardy and the right choice for a Thanet coastal screen. The winters of 2010 and 2018 proved otherwise.
Garden centres across Thanet sell pittosporum tenuifolium as the fast-growing, salt-tolerant, evergreen screen. Every description they give is technically accurate. What the label does not say is that this hardiness depends on a sheltered position, well-drained soil and protection from cold winds: the conditions that Thanet’s exposed chalk-and-salt coastal positions, from Westgate-on-Sea CT8 around to Cliftonville CT9 and Broadstairs CT10’s north-facing terraces, reliably fail to provide. The pattern repeats after hard winters: brown papery branches that still look alive, a solid green screen that turned sparse overnight, and the same question of whether to cut it back hard or take it out.
Why pittosporum keeps being recommended for Thanet
Pittosporum tenuifolium has genuinely useful properties. It grows quickly, produces dense evergreen foliage, tolerates salt spray, and is commonly seen doing well in UK coastal gardens. The RHS rates most tenuifolium cultivars as H4, meaning hardy in most of the UK through a normal winter. Those facts are accurate and not the problem.
The problem is what the H4 rating assumes. RHS H4 means “hardy through most of the UK, but may suffer in severe winters in cold, exposed positions or inland frost pockets.” Achieving even H4 performance requires that the plant is in well-drained soil, sheltered from cold drying winds, and protected from prolonged hard frosts in its first few years while establishing. The RHS notes specifically that pittosporum is “at its most vulnerable to frost damage when young” and that “problems usually arise in very cold, exposed sites, or where soil stays wet in winter.”
Garden centres do not routinely explain those conditions. The plant is sold as a coastal hedge, with salt-tolerance correctly highlighted, and the assumption is that coastal equals mild. For the west coast of the UK, Cornwall, Devon and the Channel Islands, that assumption broadly holds. For the North Kent coast, the chalk peninsula of the Isle of Thanet, and the exposed positions that face the North Sea and the English Channel, it does not.
What Thanet’s chalk geology actually does to pittosporum roots in winter
Thanet sits on the Margate Chalk Formation, the same chalk bedrock that underlies Pegwell Bay, Broadstairs CT10, the inland plateau at Minster and Sarre, and the coastal terraces of Cliftonville CT9 and Westgate-on-Sea CT8. Chalk drains very fast. After rain, the topsoil moisture moves through within hours rather than days. In most planting contexts, that drainage is a benefit: waterlogged roots are a bigger killer of hedging plants than almost any other cause on this peninsula.
In the context of frost survival, however, fast drainage becomes a liability. Soil moisture acts as a thermal buffer: water has a high heat capacity, and moist soil loses heat slowly as temperatures fall. On Thanet’s chalk, the topsoil is dry for much of the winter, and that buffer is absent. A sharp frost that drops to -8°C overnight on the Margate Chalk plateau, with a clear sky and a north-east wind off the North Sea, penetrates the root zone faster and deeper than the same temperature on a heavy clay soil in the Weald. Roots that would survive on a sheltered, moisture-retaining soil in the same air temperature can be damaged or killed in Thanet’s chalk-and-fast-drain conditions.
The second factor is wind. Pittosporum tenuifolium is marketed as wind-tolerant because it handles salt spray and moderate coastal breezes. What it does not tolerate is a sustained cold north-east wind in hard weather: the kind of desiccating, below-zero airflow that comes off the North Sea during east continental high-pressure blocks. These are the conditions that characterised the late winter of 2010 to 2011 and the Beast from the East in late February and early March 2018, when Faversham in Kent recorded a low of -14.2°C. That temperature is well outside the H4 range under any conditions; on Thanet’s exposed north-east-facing positions, the effective chill was worse.
What the post-winter damage looks like
The diagnostic pattern after a hard winter is consistent enough that I can identify it from the road. The outer leaves of the hedge turn brown and papery, starting on the north or north-east face and moving inward. The branches themselves often stay flexible for weeks after the leaves die: this is the critical point where most homeowners make their biggest mistake.
The temptation is to cut the brown material back immediately, in early March when the damage becomes fully visible and the garden looks at its worst. That is the wrong time. Pittosporum, like many borderline-hardy evergreens, shows its full extent of damage slowly. Branches that appear dead in early March can still be alive: a scratch test on the bark (scrape a small section with a thumbnail, looking for green or white living tissue beneath) often reveals live wood that will push new growth when the soil warms. Branches that test dead in March should still be left until late April, when the full recovery picture is clear. Cutting hard in March risks removing branches that would have recovered, leaving permanent gaps in the canopy.
Where the roots have been killed outright, the whole plant fails to push new growth by mid-May. At that point the decision is clear. Where only branches have died back to the main framework, a hard cut to live wood in late April or May, after the soil has warmed and recovery growth is beginning, gives the plant a realistic chance.
WCA 1981 nesting window: 1 March to 31 August
Under section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, intentionally disturbing an active bird’s nest is an offence. Penalty on conviction: up to £5,000 per offence. The nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. Frost-damaged pittosporum typically needs its hardest remedial pruning in April and May: both months fall inside the nesting window, and pittosporum’s dense evergreen canopy, even when partially brown, remains viable nesting habitat for house sparrows, blackbirds and dunnock. Before any cut, walk both sides of the plant slowly, look through the outer canopy, and listen for alarm calls. If any sign of an active nest is present, work around that section or reschedule. A short video posted by gardenville.tv on YouTube in March 2011, following the severe winters of 2010 to 2011, documents the practical process of cutting frost damage out of a pittosporum tenuifolium variety in a UK garden: Pittosporum tenuifolium variety showing frost damage. What is notable is not the remediation technique but the scale of the material being removed: significant sections of what had been a healthy established plant. This was a sheltered garden. The winters of 2010 to 2011 were among the harshest recorded in the UK in thirty years, and pittosporum losses across coastal gardens were widespread. The Beast from the East in February and March 2018 produced the same result in many Kent gardens that had replanted since 2011.
A decade of mild winters between hard events is long enough for a newly planted pittosporum to become a settled, apparently reliable feature of a garden. That is precisely the problem: the plant looks fine in the mild years because the conditions that reveal its limits have not arrived yet. The first genuinely hard winter after a decade of mild ones removes screens that took years to establish.
What to plant instead for Thanet coastal screening
The choice depends on exposure level. For the fully exposed chalk-and-salt positions on Thanet’s coastal edge, the species that perform reliably are covered in detail in the chalk-and-salt Thanet species matrix. The short version:
- Escallonia macrantha or ‘C.F. Ball’: the most reliable fast-growing evergreen screen for exposed Thanet coastal positions, including the north-east-facing terraces of Cliftonville CT9 and the seafront properties of Westgate-on-Sea CT8 and Birchington CT7. Genuinely salt-tolerant, fully hardy on Thanet chalk, and cuts back without complaint if it overgrows. The correct species for most of the positions where pittosporum fails.
- Griselinia littoralis: slightly slower than escallonia, with broader, shinier leaves and a more upright habit. The dominant evergreen hedge on Thanet’s chalk-and-salt coastal belt. Takes hard cutting, recovers from cold damage better than pittosporum, and its naturally flexible stems handle the coastal wind exposure that causes pittosporum’s dense canopy to catch and hold cold air.
- Tamarix tetrandra: for the most exposed positions where nothing dense will stand, a tamarix windbreak gives the protection that allows a more formal hedge species to establish behind it. Not a substitute for a privacy screen, but the first line of defence on the most exposed Ramsgate CT11, Margate CT9 and Cliftonville CT9 coastal gardens.
For sheltered positions, the walled back gardens of Broadstairs CT10 and Ramsgate CT12 where pittosporum is often planted with the most optimism, it does often perform as advertised in normal winters. In those positions the risk is not daily exposure but the once-a-decade hard winter that arrives without warning. Escallonia and griselinia remain the lower-risk choice even there. If the appeal of pittosporum is specifically the fine-textured, dark-stemmed foliage in a compact variety, the choice is not between pittosporum and a big griselinia: it is between pittosporum and a sheltered position with south or west aspect, a wall at the plant’s back, and fleece protection on hand for the first three winters while it establishes. That is not impossible management. It is simply not the “plant it and forget it” coastal screen the garden centre labels imply.
