The mistake that costs Thanet gardens their best natural boundary: confusing yew with leylandii.

Every few months I get a call from somewhere in Broadstairs CT10 or Ramsgate CT12 that goes the same way: someone has an old yew hedge that has become wide and shapeless, and they want it removed because they have been told, or have assumed, that yew cannot come back from a hard cut. So they are pricing up replacement with something faster-growing. The replacement is almost always worse. The assumption is almost always wrong. Yew is one of the very few conifers that will regenerate from old wood. The plant they are thinking of is leylandii. Here is why that distinction matters, and what a yew renovation actually involves.

The mistake I see most often with yew

People who have dealt with a leylandii hedge come away with a well-founded rule: do not cut conifer hedges into old brown wood, because they will not recover. That rule is accurate for leylandii, and for the majority of conifer hedges. It does not apply to yew.

Yew (Taxus baccata) carries dormant adventitious buds throughout its old wood, including stems that are decades or centuries old. When you cut hard into old yew wood, those buds receive a hormonal signal and break into growth. The RHS guidance on yew renovation is explicit: yew makes new shoots even from very old wood, and pruning mistakes will grow over in time. This capacity is genuinely unusual. Of the conifer family, yew is effectively alone in being reliably renovatable by hard cutting. Leylandii, thuja, chamaecyparis and the various false cypresses do not share this characteristic.

The practical consequence is significant. An overgrown leylandii hedge that has been cut into its brown interior is usually a removal job. An overgrown yew hedge in the same condition is usually a renovation job. The plant that looks like it has nothing left to give is sitting on a reserve of dormant buds waiting for the right instruction.

Myth: “Cut the yew back hard and it will die, or just stay bare.”

Fact: yew (Taxus baccata) regenerates reliably from old wood, including bare brown stems stripped of all green.

This is not anecdote. Burncoose Nurseries, a UK specialist nursery with over forty years of experience propagating and selling hedging plants, documents the renovation cycle clearly in their practical guidance video on Taxus hedges: hard renovation cuts into old wood are standard practice, not a last resort. UK horticultural authorities including the RHS describe yew as suitable for reduction of up to 50 per cent in height and width in a single season, with the expectation of full recovery over the following two to three growing seasons. The stagger-cut method, where one side of the hedge is cut back hard in year one and the other side in year two, gives the plant an active green face to draw from while the cut side recovers.

The timing of the hard cut matters. Mid-spring (April into early May) is the preferred window for a renovation cut into old wood, for two reasons: the risk of prolonged frost damage to the freshly exposed wood has passed, and the plant has the longest possible growing season ahead of it to push new epicormic shoots before the following winter. A hard renovation cut done in September or October works, but leaves the newly bare face exposed through the whole winter before the first flush of new growth.

For routine maintenance trimming of an established yew hedge that does not need renovation, the conventional UK timing is late August through September: after the main flush of new growth has hardened off, before the berries ripen fully, and outside the core nesting season.

Why yew is the right plant for Thanet chalk gardens

Yew (Taxus baccata) is native to the chalk downlands of southern England. The Margate Chalk Member and the underlying chalk geology that runs across the Isle of Thanet from Cliftonville CT9 through to Broadstairs CT10 and into the inland parishes of Minster and Sarre is exactly the geology yew evolved on. Where escallonia and griselinia are the correct choices for an exposed coastal position in the salt-belt, and where leylandii fails on Thanet's shallow chalk profile through wind-rock and salt desiccation, yew is the species that has been demonstrably in the ground on Thanet for centuries: churchyard yews at St John the Baptist Margate, St Lawrence Ramsgate and St Mary the Virgin Minster represent examples of Thanet chalk-garden yew that have been subject to hard cutting for generations and continue to regenerate.

Yew tolerates the chalk pH (typically 7.5 to 8.0 across Thanet) without difficulty. It is not a fast-grower, which is its commercial disadvantage against leylandii or cherry laurel, but on a chalk site its root system is suited to the conditions in a way that many faster alternatives are not. An established yew hedge on Thanet chalk is genuinely hard to replace with something better. The slower growth rate is also an advantage in one respect: annual or biennial maintenance cuts keep it in check without the aggressive management schedule that leylandii demands.

How renovation actually works: the stagger method

For a Thanet yew hedge that has grown significantly wider and taller than wanted, the renovation sequence is straightforward:

  1. Year one, spring (April): Cut one long side of the hedge back hard, right to the main stems if necessary. There should be no green left on the cut face. Leave the top and the other side untouched. The uncut side and the top continue to photosynthesize and drive the root system; the nutrients and hormones this produces fuel the new bud break on the cut side.
  2. That same season: New epicormic shoots emerge from the cut wood, typically within six to ten weeks. The first flush is thin and needs time to thicken up.
  3. Year two, spring: Cut the second side back hard in the same way. The first side is now producing a new green layer. Cut the top down to the target height at this point if it also needs reducing.
  4. Year three onward: Normal maintenance trimming, cutting back to just inside the new green layer on each face. The hedge rebuilds its density over the following two to three seasons.

For height reduction only (a hedge that is too tall but not too wide), a single cut to the target height in April is sufficient. The top will push new growth from the cut stems in the same season. For a hedge that needs both height and width reduction, doing both in the same season is possible but slows recovery; the stagger approach is more reliable on a Thanet chalk site where the dry summer months (June through August on fast-draining Margate Chalk) put additional stress on a plant already in recovery mode.

Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981: yew renovation in spring means working inside the nesting window

The preferred window for hard renovation of yew (April) sits inside the main nesting season, which runs 1 March to 31 August under section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Intentionally damaging or destroying an active nest is an offence: up to £5,000 per offence on conviction. Yew hedges are used by blackbirds, dunnocks, song thrushes and robins as nesting sites; on Thanet's coastal gardens the salt-belt scrub species (whitethroat, garden warbler) will also use dense yew. The rule is: carry out a competent visual nest check before any work starts, even on a hard renovation. Walk the full length of both faces slowly, look through the outer canopy into the interior, and listen for alarm calls from adults. If there is any sign of an active nest, leave that section and return after 31 August. This is not optional and does not have an exception for renovation work. The toxicity question

Yew is toxic. All parts of the plant except the red aril (the fleshy part of the berry) contain taxine alkaloids, which are harmful to humans, livestock and most domestic animals, with horses particularly vulnerable. This is a real consideration when working with yew, not a myth. But it is not a reason to remove a yew hedge, and it is not a reason to avoid renovation work.

The practical precautions are straightforward: wear gloves when cutting, bag and dispose of all clippings rather than composting them or leaving them where horses or cattle could reach them, and wash hands before eating or handling food. Keep pets out of the work area while cutting is in progress and until fallen material has been cleared. None of this is unusual for a professional contractor and none of it makes yew unmanageable as a garden hedge.

The toxicity concern that does legitimately affect planting decisions is proximity to horse paddocks and grazing land. Where a Thanet garden backs onto the agricultural fringe of Minster, Sarre or Birchington CT7, and where horses or livestock could reach fallen yew through a fence or gate, the planting position needs to be chosen carefully. In that context, an alternative such as hornbeam or hawthorn avoids the risk without giving up the deciduous screening quality. For a standard residential garden in Margate CT9, Cliftonville, Ramsgate CT11/CT12 or Broadstairs CT10, the toxicity concern is manageable with basic care.

What this means for your Thanet hedge

If you have an overgrown yew hedge that you were planning to remove because you assumed it could not recover from hard cutting, it is worth getting a second look before the machinery arrives. The hedge that looks too far gone is usually not. The renovation path is straightforward, the outcome is good, and a mature yew hedge on chalk-and-salt Thanet soil is not something you replace cheaply or quickly. The leylandii rule does not apply here.

The one scenario where removal is genuinely the right call is a yew hedge that has suffered significant structural damage: a major stem split from ice loading, or root failure on a site with a thin chalk profile and drainage problems. In those cases the mechanical integrity of the hedge is compromised and renovation is working against the structure rather than with it. A contractor's assessment is the right starting point.
