When crown raising is the right job

• Blocking the seafront view: one of the most common Thanet callouts. A mature sycamore or lime in a rear garden that's grown up to obscure the Margate seafront, the Ramsgate harbour or the Broadstairs bay. Raising the crown to 6-8m gives the view back without touching the top of the tree.
• Vehicle clearance: driveway trees on Nash Road, Hereson, Salmestone or the Westwood belt that have dropped low enough to catch a Transit roof.
• Pedestrian clearance on the pavement: where a street tree or garden-boundary tree overhangs the footpath; TDC guidance is 2.5m minimum.
• Building clearance: where a tree has grown against a gutter, an eave or a solar panel array.
• Under-planting a border: raising the crown so a shrub layer underneath can get enough light.

How high to raise

The rule of thumb: the raised crown should still occupy at least two-thirds of the tree's total height. So a 12m tree can safely be raised to about 4m; a 15m tree to 5m. Raise higher than that and the tree looks lollipop-cropped and destabilises: most of the mass is concentrated at the top.

On Thanet's exposed coastal sites, over-raising is a serious wind-load problem. A tall bare stem with a heavy top acts like a lever in a gale: the trunk snaps, or the roots lift. Keep the raise proportionate to the exposure.

Species notes

• Lime, sycamore, London plane: the usual candidates. All raise cleanly. Lime will throw water-sprouts from the exposed stem for two years afterwards; a return visit to remove those is included in the quote.
• Holm oak: raise reluctantly and lightly. Prefers minimal disturbance; too much bare stem exposes bark that isn't used to sun and it can crack.
• Beech, hornbeam (inland only): raise in late summer.
• Fruit trees: rarely need raising; usually you want the fruit-bearing branches lower, not higher.
