Reduction vs topping

Reduction cuts branches back to a lateral (a side branch) at least one-third the diameter of the cut being made. That lateral becomes the new leader; the tree responds by growing outward from it, in a shape that continues the tree's natural form. Wound closes cleanly. Tree lives another 30 years.

Topping cuts branches at an arbitrary height, mid-stem, with no lateral to take over. The tree responds by throwing a mess of vigorous water-sprouts (epicormic growth) at the cut point. Those sprouts are weakly attached, grow fast, and are the leading cause of storm-failure on topped urban trees. Wound doesn't close. Decay enters the stub. Tree is compromised.

The two look similar to someone who doesn't know trees. They aren't the same job.

When reduction is the right call

• Overgrown for the plot: the mature sycamore or lime that's now too big for a Cliftonville terrace back garden. Reduce 20-30% to give it another 15 years of health in the same spot.
• Wind-load management on exposed coastal plots: Kingsgate, Botany Bay, Pegwell, Foreness. A mature tree catching too much wind. Reduction lowers the lever arm and reduces the strain on the roots.
• Boundary disputes: a tree overhanging a neighbour's roof. Reduction on your side to bring it back into your airspace.
• Storm damage repair: after a big limb loss, reducing the surviving side to rebalance the tree.
• Sea-view restoration: where crown-raising alone won't do it and you need to take height off as well.

How much to reduce

Standard maximum: 30% of the crown volume in a single visit. More than that and the tree starves: too much leaf area lost to keep the roots fed. If a tree needs 50% off, do 25% now and 25% in three years, once the tree has responded. Every phased-reduction job on Thanet gets a written schedule for the return visit.

Species-specific limits

• Beech, hornbeam: sensitive. Never more than 20%. Late summer only.
• Holm oak: very sensitive to heavy work. 15% maximum, spread over multiple years.
• Sycamore, lime, London plane, ash (healthy): tolerate 30% in one hit.
• Yew: tolerates heavy reduction better than almost any other species, but slow to regrow.
• Cherry, plum: summer only (June/July), silver-leaf reason.

Pricing

Reduction is the most skilled and time-consuming of the crown operations. Typical Thanet range: £350 – £1,200 per mature tree, arisings chipped and cleared. Very large or awkward-access trees quoted individually.
